The Exhibition on the History of Yungang Caves World Cultural Heritage Site !
The Yungang Caves are very proud to be a United Nations World Cultural Heritage Site since the Year 2001. Among the many such sites in China, the Yungang Caves are a Top Attraction as the Caves are some of the oldest relics in China and among the most sacred and ancient buddhist shrines.
Two gates lead away from this first Courtyard, to unknown destinations. Follow the left corner gate to the Central Cave 6 and the main feautures of the Yungang constellation of Buddhist Statues and Carvings.
A look at the small South-East Corner Belltower, which was under renovations during our December 2005 visit. As is prescribed for chinese buddhist Temples the South-West corner holds a small DrumTower. Both are used to announce Temple occasions and gatherings.
Entering the first courtyard one is confronted with a first good view of the Yungang Cliff Face, partially obscured by the Ching Dynasty Era Pavilion hiding Cave 6 and the Main Holy Statues. Due to the Pavilion Cave 6 is the Best Preserved Cave at Yungang, still retaining much of its original paint & colors.
