View of the Gate of Literary Glory and the path leading northward into the Palace of Literary Glory (Photo: December 2013).
Due south of the eastern outer road of the outer court, one can see the Golden River waterway winding its way. After arching around the outer court it eventually flows away into the south Moat. It exits the Palace in between of the Halls of the Offices of the Ministers of the Cabinet and the adjacent Headquarters of the Guards of Honor Regiment.
A side gate to the Halls of the Offices of the Cabinet Ministers sits across of and south of the Gate of Literary Glory and the path leading to the Palace of Litarary Glory complex.
Alike its Feng Shui counterpart the Golden River, the eastern outer road is not straight but arched alike a Tartar Bow. In the east following the curve of the bow one srolls between greenery which adds to the sense of spaciousness and grandeur of the eastern outer court.
To the north of the eastern outer road sits a very large complex of Palaces and Pavilions which are in use by the Palace Museum Staff today. In the past these were part of the innermost workings of the Palace, containing the Imperial Stables but also a section designated as living quarters of the Princes and Royal Children
The Eastern Flowery Gate (Dong Hua Men) sits at the very eastern end of the eastern outer road, although in the heydays of the Qing Dynasty the path continued even further to Dong An Gate. On the inside of the East Flowery Gate is a white marble bridge leading across the Golden River stream.
