This Satellite Image shows an overview of the National Theatre and immediate surrounding area of the XiCheng District, on an unknown date in the 2nd Half of the Year 2002. Before the year 2002 the area west and behind the Great Hall of the Peoples was entirely taken up by traditional Hutong, or winding Alley's of Peoples Residential Area's that are a unique architectural feature of the Old Imperial Capital and for which Beijing is Famous. An entire block of historic hutong have been levelled to make Space for the new National Theatre Dome. Some of these Hutong remain untill now, starting with Shibei Hutong leading south from Chang An Avenue.
Clearly in the early stages of it's construction , only the central core of the Dome's Foundations have been layed in 2002. In november 2004 the Central Hall was standing and the outer layer was being applied to the now silvery Dome. In 2005 all work had moved indoors for the completion of the many details of this large Architectural Wonder. The entire Complex will remain under construction untill at least late 2007, to be opened with the Olympic Games of 2008, in which it will play a Central Ceremonial Role. After this, the National Theatre will be a Center of Culture in the New City of Beijing for a long time to come.
