The first caves of Bingling Si (炳灵寺), today a famous Buddhist Cave complex found south of Lanzhou in Linxia Hui Autonomous County of Gansu Province on the lower parts of the upper reaches of the Yellow River, were started around the year 420 A.D. at the end of the Western Jin Dynasty (265 A.D. - 420 A.D.). Work on the caves would continue for the next 1000 years.

In that same period, in Da Xia state (407 AD - 427 AD) on the middle reaches of the Yellow River,  historical records mention the rebuilding of the Haibao Ta Buddhist Monastery in Yinchuan, by Helian Bobo the king of Da Xia state (407 AD - 427 AD).

THE YELLOW RIVER DURING THE NORTHERN WEI OR TUOBA WEI REIGN:
The first caves of the now world famous Longmen Grottoes Buddhist Cave Complex near Luoyang, on the Lo River, a tributary of the Yellow River, were started during the rule of Northern Wei
Dynasty (493 A.D. and 534 A.D.) not long after it moved its Capital from Datong in North Shanxi Province to Luoyang in Henan Province, just south of the Yellow River.
