Dandong is located at the mount of the Yalu River where it flows into the Bay of Korea, a part of the Yellow Sea. Apart from being a designated major export production center in Liaoning Province it has some intriguing historical sites. The main scenic sight is the Hu Shan and above described Tiger Mountain Great Wall of China.

Benxi City & Area :
Southeast of Shenyang lies the major metropolis of Benxi, one of Liaoning Provinces' 3 largest Cities with 1.5 million inhabitants. Located nearby Benxi is the largest water-filled cave in Asia. Furthermore within an area of some 45 square kilometers (17 square miles) there is a large collection of Caves.
Within the boundaries of what is known as the Benxi Water Cave National Park, there are six areas of particular interest: Mount Miaohou, Mount Tiecha which is East of Benxi, Mount Guanmen, the Spa Temple, Tanggou Valley, and the Water Cave.

Mount Tiecha Holy Mountain is also known as Jiu Ding (Nine Tops). The Nine Tops referring to fact that its eastern, southern and northern peaks can be seen from all three sides.
Among Tiecha mountain's many caves is Yunguang Cave, which houses eight treasures: stone dragon, stone toad, stone fish, stone bed, stone lotus, stone longevity and 'the wind that calms the pearl'. The Tiecha Mountain with its Yunguang Cave is considered the birthplace of Taoism in Northeast China and is renowned for its large quantities of ancient calligraphy carved into its rocks on and near the Mountain.

Truly the most popular and spectacular marvel outside of Benxi City, however is the Water Cave. The water cave is an underground river 3 kilometers long and formed some 5000 years ago, known as the largest water filled cave in Asia. With its public entry point some 35 kilometers from the City Center of Benxi the flowing water is so clear that the riverbed is always visible. The underground flow is at least 2 meters deep and wide enough for 20-30 boats Visitors to follow each other so visitors can join a ride on the sightseeing boat-ride and enter into the magic and mystery of the stalactite formations that have formed over millions of years. Stalactites and Stalagmites, various colorful formations and such abound inside the illuminated cave.
At nearby sightseeing places and pavilions along the hillsides flocks of artists attempt artistic recreations of the various mountains within the Tanggou Valley where the main park is located. Other paint the flowers, Trees, waterfalls and streams of the scenic valley.
Benxi Water Cave National Park is a unique wonderland of pastoral beauty that combined with its various caves attracts many visitors from throughout the Province as well as other parts of China. Especially Japanese and Korean foreign travelers are often seen.

Among the historic and tourist highlights of Huanren Manchu Autonomous County are Wunu Mountain City, a Goguryeo Kingdom which is part of a combined UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes sites in Ji'an a town on the North Korean Border just within Jilin Province.

Further there are 9 palaces, 12 Buddhist convents, and then even more attractions.

Among the many peaks, a naturally formed statue of the Buddha stands an impressive 70 meters high. It is claimed to be largest naturally occurring image of Maitreya Buddha in the world.

Located North-East out of Fengcheng, 2.5 kilometers southeast of Fenghuang Man Autonomous County in Eastern Liaoning Province, Mount Fenghuang has a long history and counts is another famed mountain with a great number of historic sites.
Fenghuan Mountain is actually a Hill with a Height of a mere 840 Meters, but it has become famous regardless as the first famous mountain of the Great Wall of China in the East. Not even this is true as the real first Mountain of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall of China IN China is the Tiger Mountain, which is located due North of Dandong, however regardless Fenghuan Mountain is counted as one of the four famous mountains in Liaoning Province.
It is famous mainly the Great Wall of China outer layer defenses of the Ming Dynasty, curving along its peaks, westward from within North Korea towards the far away City of Shenyang. the Tiger Mountain and its Great Wall of China. Part of the outer-most defensive layer of the Eastern stretches of the Great Wall, the Tiger Mountain section and all other great wall sections in Liaoning Province were constructed during the long reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD - 1644 AD). Although the Great Wall of China extends even further Eastward into North Korea, for all practicalities at the moment, the Tiger Mountain Great Wall is the Eastern-most section of the Great Wall visitable by the Public.

On the mountain top of Tiger Mountain (HuShan) stands a beacon tower, erected there many centuries ago to guard against intruding armies from the North. Later during the late 16Th and the 17Th Century in particular these sections of the Great Wall were in defense against the arising Manchu Qhing Dynasty of the North. The Tiger Mountain beacon tower gives a panoramic view across Yalu River and along the Sino-Korean border. As the Tiger Mountain lies on the bank of the Yalu River it is the highlight of a tour of the important scenic spots of the Yalu River Facing the Red Island in the Yalu River and the ancient city of Yizhou (Sinuiju) in North Korea, across the River, the Beacon at Tiger Mountain offers some of the most remarkable views among the many of the Great Wall of China today.

The Highlights and Scenic Spots of Liaoning Province are truly too many to mention. Depending on taste and choice of interest, there is the modern City of Dalian - the Hong Kong of the North and naturally the Capital of Shenyang, for those seeking the City high-life. Those in need of a holiday on the Beach best refer to coastal cities on either the Liaodong Peninsula or along the South-Western coastline of the Province.
The Most well-known Tourist Site in Liaoning is the former Qing Dynasty Imperial Palace of the Ching Dynasty (1644 AD - 1911 AD), who had their homeland in Manchuria and Shenyang as their Capital before their conquest of China entire. The second Imperial Palace after the "Forbidden City" in Beijing, the "Mukden Palace" is a sprawling estate located in the old quarters of the City of Shenyang, a Museum with enormous historic value that was recently added to the UNESCO World Historic and Cultural Heritage List.

On the other hand the much appreciated sites of the Province are mainly located in the East, where Fenghuan Shan and Tiger Mountain carry the Great Wall of China along their ridges. The Ultimate East Terminus of the Great Wall of China outermost layer starts with the beacon tower atop the Tiger Mountain then winds west through Liaoning and around Shenyang City to disappear over the Nulu'Erhu Mountains in Western Liaoning Province into Inner-Mongolia Autonomous Region where it ends somewhere far North-East of Hohhot in the Gobi Desert.

Holy Mountains in Liaoning amount to mere Hills, but there are two options to chose from. The Qian Shan, which is easily accesible from Anshan City, and the Fenghuan Shan, which lies at some distance traveling North-West out of Dandong City on the North Korean Border and near the Yellow Sea Coastline.
Anshan is further the site of the "Anshan Jade Buddha", the largest Jade Buddha Statue in the world.
The highest Mountain in
Liaoning Province is Mount Huabozi - HuaBozi Shan, which with a mere 1336 Meters announces the more Northernly Changbai Shan Mountain Range.

A last hidden Jewel of the Province, a place not often visited by foreigners (so far), are the "Three Tombs (Shi Ling)", the site of the historically significant Tombs of the founders of the Qing Dynasty. The Tombs are also known as the "Three Tombs outside of the Great Wall" as they are the only Imperial Burial sites not strictly on Chinese soil.
Before conquering the Chinese Empire in 1644 AD, the Tribes of Manchuria had been united under the Flag of the Aisin-Gioro Clan of the Manchu. Their Leader until 1626 AD was Chief Nuerhachi. Among the achievements of Nuerhachi were the capture and creation of Capital at the City of Shenyang in Manchuria (Manchukuo in Chinese).
At Shenyang Nuerhachi first became a Northern Prince and Ruler, then the Emperor of the Northern Qing Dynasty.
From Shenyang, the troops went on to capture the Provinces of Shandong
and Inner Mongolia. Having surrounded the North China plain and the declining Ming Dynasty, the chance for a final move came for the Qing when a Bandit uprising overwhelmed Beijing forcing the existent Last Ming Emperor Chong Zhen (Chen Chun) to kill himself at Jingshan. With the country in Chaos the Manchurians -already poised to strike- moved in through the Shanhai Pass (near Qinhuangdao) on the Liaoning Province

Border, and - welcomed by the common people, established an Empire that would last for 455 Years, counting 11 Emperors.

The burial sites of Three Great Princes of the Qing Dynasty of the North compose the Three Tombs outside the Great Wall. The First and most Important among these Tombs is Fuling Tomb, which is also known as the Eastern Tomb.
Fu Ling is the largest and most magnificent shrine and tomb of the Three as it is the burial site of none less than
founding Emperor Nuerhachi and his mistress, who is also are buried at Fuling Tomb.
The succesor of Nuerhachi, Nurhachi's son, Huang Taiji (the father of Emperor Shunzhi) and his empress are buried in Zhaoling. The largesse and beautiful surroundings of the enormous Beiling Park surrounding Zhaoling tomb have seen compared to the Ming Tombs (Shisan Ling), just North of Beijing. A third tomb, Yongling Tomb, completes the famous tomb group known as the "three tombs outside of the Great Wall".

There are several Ethnic Minority Members and their communities to be found in Liaoning Province. Among these the main communities of the Manchu Nationality lie near Fushun, Benxi, Anshan and Dandong. Others lie just across the Border inside Jilin

tourist treasure of Liaoning Province, the museum dedicated to the "War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea" (also known as the Korean War) and its affiliated Jinjiang mountain(锦江山), a chinese look-out point during first actions of the War nearby. Today the Jinjiang Mountain is the city's largest park in the City dedicated to the War Years.
The third must-participate-in activity for tourists and holidayers visiting Dandong is to rent a speed boats or buy a ticket for a ride on one of the frequent passenger boats and head onto the waters of the Yalu River.
As exactly half of the flow of the river belongs to China (PRC) boats are able to approach the middle of the river and offer a closer look at the North Korean city of Sinuiju.
North Koreans often gather close to the river's edge, waving to foreigners as they cruise by. The view of the City does not offer much to see except for a ferris wheel that is viewable from across the Yalu River. Some claim it was probably built for propaganda purposes. Visa to travel across the border and visit Sinuiji however, are notoriously hard to come by (Try: Impossible) so, so far, no one has gone over to find out the answer to the ridle (The DrBen.Net / ChinaReport Staff will be working to gain access with North-Korean permission).
Regardless of the uninteresting Skyline of Sinuiju, the Yalu River Crossing and Friendship Bridge attract plenty visitors, especially in the summer high season.
Last but not least Dandong's provincial area's are the home of some Manchu Ethnic Communities. Find them concentrated in Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County (simplified Chinese: 宽甸满族自治县; pinyin: Kuāndiàn Mǎnzú Zìzhìxiàn) of Dandong Prefecture.
